Permanent exhibition

The two floors of the Renaissance castle depict the Prehistory of Lower Austria. Numerous finds, on show in the museum, document the millennia from the Palaeolithic Age to the Ice Age, from the time of the hunters of mammoths to the crafts, life and rituals of the Celts. The exhibition documents the origins of culture, the progress and achievements which today often leave us in awe.

Many finds tell their own stories, while some present enigmas. For instance, there are the skulls with holes drilled into them – a practice known as trepanation - dating from the Iron Age which throw up many questions. Why were they drilled, and did the patients survive the operation?

What do you know about our world 40,000 years ago?
